Despite this Point Loma, CA home’s location in a neighborhood featuring mostly coastal contemporary architecture, its Spanish revival style is a nod to early San Diego. The homeowners were seeking to capture the essence of a residence from 100 years ago with an extensive remodel, yet with all the luxuries of modern living.
Southwestern style colors throughout the home create a warm and inviting atmosphere, with walls covered in mosaics, tiles, stones, and fabrics. Not a single white wall disrupts the flow, as every surface contributes to the traditional Spanish feel.
The richness of dark wood cabinets harmonizes with the interior doors, ornate mirrors, and molding. Intricate leg details on the furniture and elaborate applied molding on the doors set the tone for a style that is both elevated and cohesive—one that harkens back to old-world charm. In the main living area, Holland’s Custom Cabinets crafted of two entertainment/storage cabinets on either side of an existing fireplace. Functionally modern, their look and feel complemented the sought-after design aesthetic. Over the fireplace a hefty, period-correct mantle adds space and displays artwork.
In the kitchen, while the darker cabinetry serves as a focal point that sets the tone, an island adds space for prep and gathering, plus functionality. Adjacent the main kitchen, a small buffet area cleverly utilizes space that might otherwise be overlooked. Floating shelves with decorative metal brackets are both beautiful and practical, matching the exposed beams above. Just off the kitchen, a cabinet featuring glass doors and exposed traditional hinges makes for both a beautiful piece of furniture as well as an elegant way to display glassware and other cherished items.
This remodel presented the challenge of finding hardware and materials that fit the style, a task we were assisted with by Advantage Design Partners, the main contractor for the overall project. They helped us source necessary components from other countries and antique stores, blending new cabinetry with antique elements to achieve the desired look.
The home’s three bathrooms reflect the classic Spanish aesthetic with carefully chosen tiles that lend an elegant and timeless feel. The consistency of style is evident in the cabinetry, with distressed wood and traditional finishes, adding warmth and authenticity. The small, pool bathroom features earthen-toned tiles and a built-in shelving display.
