For their country home in east San Diego County, these homeowners engaged Holland’s Custom Cabinets for three different remodeling phases over multiple years. With the first remodel phase over five years old, they were concerned about ensuring a seamless transition from that older work to work done 18 months ago to the current phase.
For example, to complement the custom cabinetry we made for them five years ago, when it came time to refresh the sewing/crafts area and create a new desktop for the home office, we were able to match the custom cabinet types, finishes, and hardware choices.
In a few instances, we were unable to source some of the hardware and functional components used in the first remodeling phase. Undeterred, we either found alternate sources or we made what we needed ourselves to maintain the desired look, feel, and functionality.
In the kitchen, we went with Face Frame European cabinet construction, using solid Cherry lumber and pre-finished plywood interiors. Unlike traditional American-style cabinets, Face Frame European construction lacks a front frame, thereby providing a sleeker, more seamless appearance featuring concealed hinges and full overlay doors. Face frame European cabinets tend to be desired for their sleek, sophisticated (but not necessarily modern) appearance.
Because the homeowners wanted their kitchen to preserve the rustic aesthetics of the rest of their home, they opted for a shaker style “Durango” look. While the overall ambience exudes rustic, this kitchen is also quite modern – with stainless appliances, country-themed lighting, a large island plumbed for a sink and dishwasher, and innovative storage solutions installed throughout the space.
Holland’s custom-made the desktop and countertop workspaces for this expansive home office and sewing room. We employed finishes, woods, and construction styles used in the kitchen and laundry to maintain cohesiveness with the rest of the house.
Custom under-counter open shelves store patterns, fabric, bins, and other sewing essentials while also providing easy access to materials. Nearby, a large work desk provides space for computers and peripherals, plus storage for records and other files.
From the kitchen to the office/sewing room to the laundry, creating a harmonious flow from one space to another was a requirement of this project.
Holland’s worked to craft cabinets consistent with other areas of the house while also being versatile enough to fit diverse areas and support multiple uses.
This laundry area features a large countertop prep area for folding and ironing, plus roomy under-cabinet and over-cabinet storage for various supplies. We also built a matching countertop and end panel to surround the modern-looking washer and dryer combination with a country-themed enclosure
