Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword—it’s a necessity—and at Holland’s Custom Cabinets, we embrace this mindset as a core principle of our business. Our approach to sustainability is comprehensive, encompassing everything from sourcing materials to manufacturing processes, operations, and beyond.
Sourcing Locally and Regionally
As a cabinet manufacturer, our journey towards sustainability begins with the materials we use. We use wood, paper, and other forest products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as being responsibly sourced. We also prioritize sourcing locally and regionally.
In fact, approximately 90% of our materials are sourced domestically. We start with friends, neighbors, and even our own backyards to find the materials we (and our clients) need. By doing so, we significantly reduce shipping distances, which helps lower our carbon footprint. This approach not only benefits the environment but also supports local economies and reduces costs for our clients.
When we do need to import materials, we meticulously vet them for sustainability and quality. In all cases, we do our best to ensure that any materials we source, regardless of their origins, meet our stringent standards to the extent possible. This includes utilizing only low volatility, organic materials, and using only formaldehyde-free panels, boards, and planks.
Manufacturing Efficiency
We believe that efficiency is vital to sustainability, and our manufacturing processes are no exception. We typically run at 90 to 95% efficiency, ensuring that very little material we use goes to waste. This high level of efficiency not only conserves resources but also reduces costs, which we pass on to our clients.
Recycled & Synthetic Materials
When possible, we utilize recycled and/or synthetic products and packaging—incorporating materials like reclaimed wood, recycled metal, and eco-friendly composites into our cabinetry. For packaging, we use biodegradable wraps, recycled cardboard, and water-based inks for labeling. For our cabinets, we can incorporate synthetic materials such as engineered wood, high-pressure laminates, and acrylics to make our millwork and finishes more durable, which conserves natural resources.
Digital Age
In our quest to reduce paper usage, we operate on a centralized server for work orders, project notes, and historical data. This minimizes our reliance on printed materials and allows us to share information digitally whenever possible.
Our full design service, in-house engineering, and project management are all integrated into this digital system, making our operations more efficient and environmentally friendly.
With clients, rather than printing on paper, we use CAD software whenever possible to create designs and share them electronically.
Hybrid Sales Fleet
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the materials we use to the vehicles we drive. Our entire sales fleet now consists of hybrid vehicles, which produce cleaner emissions and contribute to our overall goal of reducing the environmental impact of our activities.
Advanced Dust Collection
In our El Cajon manufacturing facility, we have implemented a state-of-the-art dust collection system. While no system is entirely dust-free, ours is designed to minimize loose dust by generating a pelletized waste product that can be recycled. This not only keeps our facility cleaner but also reduces waste.
Investing in the Future
Holland’s Custom Cabinets is ahead of the curve in supporting forward-looking green approaches to manufacturing. For example, while our spray booths are already compliant with San Diego Air Pollution Control District (APCD) regulations to control the emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), we recently invested more than $100,000 to update our systems. We recognize that traditional finishing processes can be dirty and messy, so we are actively investing in water-based finishing processes for the future.
Supporting Your Green Needs
For clients looking to meet specific environmental standards, we can provide comprehensive literature and support to help them achieve their green goals. Whether it’s meeting a particular spec or building within certain environmental constraints, we are here to assist.
Looking Ahead
From day one, Holland’s has continually explored new ways to reduce our environmental impact and improve our green practices. We understand the value of legacy, family, and sustainability. It’s in our corporate blood, and it’s reflected by how we do business.
Looking ahead, Holland’s will continue to make its operations, millwork design, engineering, manufacturing, and installation processes as environmentally responsible as possible. Together, we can make a difference—one kitchen, one project, one cabinet at a time.
