No matter what direction the kitchen cabinetry design winds have blown over the years, Holland’s Custom Cabinets has been a constant source of inspiration for turning client dreams into reality. That said, we thought it would be fun to see what the experts (including us!) are saying will be hot in kitchen design trends for 2022.
In a nutshell, tech upgrades were trendy in 2021, and we don’t expect that to change much in the coming year. Multi-purpose lighting, smart appliances, and high-functioning fixtures are on everyone’s kitchen makeover wish list.
Designs and colors inspired by nature are expected to remain popular as well. Think organic, earthy colors that range from cozy shades of green and brown, to spicy colors inspired by gardens and flowers, to soothing seascape palettes.
Multi-Use Space
Kitchens have become much more than just places to prepare food and eat it. They’ve become important hubs for the entire household. They’ve become spaces where kids do their homework, where adults can work remotely from home, or places for entertaining family and friends. As a multi-use room, kitchen spaces need to be able to adapt to a variety of user needs, including ergonomic work surfaces, easy-access power outlets, flexible lighting, flexible storage, and extra/adaptable seating.
Handleless/Recessed Handles
Nothing says sophistication more than the smooth action of push-open and close cabinet doors or drawers. Going handleless was a big-time trend in 2021, popular for its simple, sleek appearance. The trend will continue in 2022, though many homeowners are opting for recessed handles to provide a similar, streamlined look.
Lighting
Aside from the cabinetry itself, lighting is one of the most critical elements of any kitchen. Things to watch for in 2022 include the use of more accent lighting, such as small countertop lamps, task-oriented lighting, and warmer tone LED bulbs to add a cozier feel to the kitchen space. Dimmers or smart bulbs that allow you to control color temperature and light intensity are also becoming increasingly popular.
Employing large or numerous windows, or even skylights to let more in natural light is also in vogue. Sunlight can add warmth to an otherwise drab space, and the use of more windows reinforces a feeling of openness.
Storage Pantries
Pantry storage is a must for any modern kitchen. They’ve essentially become a “room” all of their own, supplanting the use of traditional kitchen cupboards and drawers with dedicated storage that allows homeowners to organize all their food goods in one area. What we are likely to see more of in 2022 is a trend toward even larger, walk-in pantries.
Sinks
Large, side-by-side double sinks that allow homeowners to prep food and wash dishes at the same time are a must-have for today’s modern kitchen. Known as “workstation sinks,” these double sinks often feature multiple faucets and can easily accommodate colanders, dish racks, cutting boards, and other accessories.
Mix of Vintage and Antiques
Continuing the “warm and comfy” trend, we expect to see modern kitchen décor incorporate more antique or vintage furniture in 2022 and beyond. This is especially popular with farmhouse style kitchens where we are seeing do-it-yourselfers adapt old dressers and buffets to provide vintage storage that has character.
Natural & Organic Accents
While it may seem ironic that modern kitchens are using more and more natural and organic materials to attain rich, earthy aesthetics, trends don’t lie. Marble and granite have been a common staple for years, and unpainted wood is a style we’re seeing more of. The use of such materials can also reduce the amount of chemically treated materials in the kitchen, further underscoring the organic trend.
Curves
With cabinetry, we’re finding that overly stark lines and boxy shapes are out in favor of gentle curves that are more reflective of the natural world. Think round side tables and curvy chairs. This approach also allows designers to incorporate elements that might be a bit out of the ordinary in the kitchen, but which can let homeowners better express their personal brands.
Wood Finishes
Painted wood remains highly popular, especially green, blue, and white tones. At the same time, natural finishes that emphasize subtle wood grains, such as wood grain found in ash, is a popular choice for accentuating today’s organic design style.
Smart Appliances
It should come as no surprise that the trend toward smart appliances will continue. Integrating your smartphone or other device with your oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, and other appliances will let you use technology to do things like make a grocery list, set timers, receive alerts when dishes are done, and much more!
