Once of the labors of love for the cabinetry and design professionals at Holland’s Custom Cabinets is to keep pace with what’s new in terms of design, features, and colors.
While the design that’s right for you is ultimately “in the eye of the beholder” (which in this case, is you), it’s always good to be aware of the latest cabinet design trends. New colors, new materials, and even new hardware choices abound each year. Staying true to what’s hot not only helps you make a bold design statement, with greater functionality to boot, it can also help increase your home’s value.
“In 2021, we’re seeing bolder paint colors, such as black, turquoise, and navy blue,” explains Jen Riggin, who’s been with Holland’s team since 2011 and is our Cabinet Engineering Manager. “What’s hot right now really runs the gamut from kitchens with white uppers and bold-colored bases to kitchens with white cabinetry surrounding daringly-colored islands, and even whole kitchens that are black—which can really be striking when done correctly.”
Coming up with a design that delights clients and helps them achieve the look and functionality they desire is one of the favorite aspects of being a Holland’s cabinetmaker and designer.
“Many of our clients come in knowing exactly what they want or something close to it,” says Jenn. “They’ve been to a friend’s house or seen something on TV or online that they want to emulate. They come to us to help put it all together, from sourcing materials and helping choose colors, to designing something that fits their lifestyle and their kitchen’s footprint.”
When people don’t know what they want is when Holland’s expertise can add the most value. After all, homeowners aren’t expected to be cabinetry design connoisseurs. That’s why they rely on Holland’s.
“Sometimes a client will come to us knowing what they don’t want,” explains Jen. “This can actually be as helpful as knowing what they do want. We can eliminate some things right up front.”
Jenn also encourages those who are unsure to visit Holland’s El Cajon, California showroom to see examples of different kinds of cabinetry, materials, and colors to see what interests them most and for help generating ideas. They may come away with new approaches and concepts that never would have occurred to them.
“The Holland’s website is also a great place to see pictures of our cabinetry in action,” she says. “If something catches your eye, save the image or print it out and share it with your Holland’s project manager to provide us with an idea of what you want. Then, we’ll be better able to create a cabinet design that reflects your taste.”
So what else is bound to be hot this year?
“We’re seeing a resurgence of brass fixtures, though not the bright brass of the 1980s and 90s, but more of a brushed or tarnished finish,” explains Jen. “It’s a fun throwback to the 1950s mid-century modern style, which happens to fit many current styles and can add an unexpected pop of color to your cabinets.”
What does Jen predict will be the most popular style of cabinets for 2021?
“Painted cabinets with a Shaker or similar clean, simple door style,” she says.
