The homeowners’ vision was clear: to capture old-world classic charm, update functionality, and make a statement in the kitchen. The cabinetry design called for a distressed finish—a challenging color, as the room’s lighting easily influenced it. When the initial finish came out with a pink-ish tone, Holland’s went back and adjusted the color to ensure the clients were happy. This commitment to client satisfaction resulted in a beautiful and enduring finish.
Every base cabinet in this kitchen was designed with a specific function in mind, like a pull-out trash bin and lazy susans. The goal was to build a highly organized, functional space, not just a beautiful one. The scope of the project extended beyond the kitchen to include bathrooms, a laundry room, and a media room that included custom storage for the homeowner’s extensive guitar collection.
Crafting Details for Discerning Clients
A central focal point of the kitchen’s old-world charm lies in the sloped, radiused wood hood above the stove. The homeowners sourced vintage timber for the bottom portion from Vintage Timber Works, and Holland’s took the raw, hundred-year-old material, milled it, and shaped it to fit the design. This hood serves as a unique statement piece, beautifully capturing the desired aesthetic.
Holland’s created a full-scale physical mock-up of the hood in their shop, allowing the clients to see and feel the shape before any final work began. Richard notes that the homeowners appreciated this hands-on approach. “You can look at something on a computer screen, and sometimes, that just doesn’t cut it,” Richard says. The mock-up helps the team bring an architectural vision to life with artisan millwork, ensuring every detail is perfectly tailored to the client.
