In the heart of La Jolla, the Hillel San Diego campus stands as a beacon for Jewish students at the University of California San Diego. This ambitious cabinetry project, two decades in the making by Pacific Building Group, required a cabinetry partner with the expertise to navigate complex requirements and the collaborative spirit to bring a long-held vision to completion. Holland’s Custom Cabinets delivered a comprehensive custom cabinetry package that blended high-end aesthetics with practical durability to create a welcoming and functional community space.
“It was a privilege to be a part of this project,” says Randy Schreibman, Holland’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “When a building is designed to be a hub for an entire community, every single detail matters. We were brought in for our ability to understand that vision and deliver craftsmanship that will stand the test of time.”
La Jolla Commercial Cabinetry with Pacific Building Group
For a project of this scale and complexity, a strong partnership is paramount.
“We’ve built a relationship where we’re not just subcontractors with Pacific Building Group; we’re a true part of the team,” says Ray Anderson, Holland’s Commercial Estimator and Project Manager. We can sit down with their team and have a frank conversation about a project’s needs, and that level of honesty and trust is what allows us to produce our best work,” explains Anderson.
“Our long-term partnership with Pacific Building Group is something we truly value,” Schreibman adds. “We’ve collaborated on other notable projects, including work at the San Diego Zoo and various medical facilities, and we value every opportunity to partner with them and create something incredible.”

A Showcase of Versatility
The vision for the new Hillel community hub was to create a modern space that felt welcoming and resilient. Holland’s met this challenge by blending a variety of materials. For the highly visible main gathering spaces and rooms, elegant, veneered rift white oak served as wall paneling and custom built-ins. This material was also used for a movable reception counter, blending a contemporary, warm look with functionality.
“The client wanted a space that felt both high-end and practical,” Anderson explains. “That’s why we used the rift white oak in the main areas for that timeless, elegant feel, but switched to durable plastic laminate for the high-traffic break room. The movable counter was a custom solution to give them ultimate flexibility to expand their main gathering space.”
The ability to work seamlessly with different materials on a single project is what sets Holland’s apart in the commercial space. The expert knowledge and attention to detail on finishes is a key feature of what Holland’s provided for the La Jolla commercial cabinetry with Pacific Building Group. While some firms may specialize in specific wood types or only laminate, Holland’s technical expertise allows the team to provide a comprehensive and cohesive custom cabinetry package designed for specific commercial needs.
“It’s a perfect example of form meeting function,” Schreibman notes. “We can create the high-end aesthetic our clients dream of, but we also have the technical expertise to ensure it’s built to last in a commercial setting.”

The Finer Points of Craftsmanship & Collaboration
From custom-built-ins to unique architectural details like a fry reglet wall base, Holland’s provided craftsmanship that elevated the durability and style of the community center. Navigating tight timelines and complex needs is a skill Holland’s team is well-versed in. The priority on a commercial project of any scale is to meet deadlines and budget while exceeding expectations and wowing the client.
“Even small architectural elements or the choice to blend materials can make the whole space feel elevated and contemporary,” Schreibman notes. “It’s one of those subtle touches that you may not consciously notice, but it all adds up to a truly high-quality build.” Every element of the Hillel San Diego campus’s cabinets focuses on enhancing how the space will be experienced.
