A fire station is more than a workplace; it’s a 24/7 operation center where a team lives and works together under high pressure. When the San Miguel Fire Station in Spring Valley, CA, needed a remodel, their primary requirement was simple: it had to work. It needed to be tough, functional, and built to withstand constant use from a dedicated team of first responders. Holland’s Custom Cabinets answered that call, providing solutions that prioritized practicality and durability. Holland’s worked directly with the client to seamlessly design and deliver a practical work space that will serve the crew for years to come.

Precision Partnership: A Direct Approach to Municipal Construction

Unlike with many commercial projects, this San Diego fire station remodel involved no third-party contractor. Holland’s worked directly with the end users—the fire chief and his team. This hands-on, collaborative approach was essential to the municipal construction project’s success, as it allowed Holland’s team to directly understand and address the specific needs and daily routines of the firefighters. The design process began with a deep dive into the station’s operational demands and daily use.

Randy Schreibman, Holland’s Director of Sales and Marketing, notes that in a 24/7 environment, durability is the most critical factor. “Abuse is one of the biggest things you have to account for,” Schreibman states. “You’re going to have firefighters with a 24-on-24-off shift. They’re not going to be using kid gloves. At the end of a 24-hour day, they’re going to be in there making dinner. A lot of the decisions are made based on simple function and durability.”

Understanding potential challenges and providing solutions is critical to the success of commercial projects. The Holland’s team went on-site to understand their needs, from the size of their kitchen appliances to the number of lockers required. This unique partnership ensured that every element of these San Diego fire station remodel cabinets were optimized for their specific workflow. The team coordinated with the fire chief, going over every detail from the number of microwaves the cabinets needed to support to the best storage solutions for the crew. “We went and got our hands dirty on the design work on this one,” Ray Anderson, Holland’s Commercial Estimator, says. “You’re meeting with people who speak a different professional language. With firefighters. It’s a little unique in that regard. Holland’s needs to bridge that gap to understand and deliver exactly what their crew needs. To ensure that, we are meeting with them every step of the way and providing clear, consistent communication and elevated support.”

San Diego Fire Station Remodel: Cabinets Built to Last

For commercial and municipal construction projects, materials need to withstand constant use while being easy to clean and maintain. Aesthetics come secondary to performance. This project incorporated several key material choices designed for longevity and hygiene maintenance.

The kitchen, arguably the most-used area in the station, was outfitted with robust cabinetry and finishes. Plastic laminate offers exceptional cabinet durability and is highly resistant to scratches, dents, and moisture—an ideal choice for areas where daily impacts are a given. The versatility of laminate allows for a clean, modern aesthetic that complements stainless-steel countertops and a large central island. The stainless steel itself is a material prized for its durability, as it is non-porous and highly resistant to stains and heat.

Rows of tall lockers were installed adjacent to the showers, offering storage for personal effects. Holland’s team created an open shelf storage area at the end of the hallway to address the unique storage needs of the crew. Plastic laminate was used in these spaces as well, ensuring consistent durability throughout the station and reinforcing a unified, rugged yet professional aesthetic.

For areas with high moisture and traffic, like the locker and shower rooms, Holland’s installed solid surface wainscoting. This material choice was deliberate. “Instead of having tile where you have grout lines that get dirty, the solid surface is sanded smooth, no seams, super easy to take care of,” Anderson explains. This non-porous material not only prevents grime from sticking but is incredibly easy to repair, ensuring the space remains sanitary and visually clean for decades to come.

For a project like this, the goal is always clear. “This is a ‘meat and potatoes’ type of job,” Schreibman explains. “It needs to work, and it needs to work consistently, day in and day out. That’s what we built for.”

Every detail of the cabinets for this San Diego fire station remodel, from the material choice or easy-to-grip hardware to their layout, was planned for accessibility and high-traffic functionality.

Delivering Results: A Tight Timeline & Strategic Install

The logistical challenge of this project was immense. The San Miguel Fire Station remained fully operational throughout the renovation. This meant that Holland’s had to execute the installation with minimal disruption to a critical public service. The team’s hands-on approach from the design phase directly informed the installation strategy. By thoroughly understanding the firefighters’ needs and daily routines, the team was able to schedule their work in a way that ensured the station could continue to operate without interruption.

“It was still a functioning fire station,” Anderson adds. “The whole time our team was in there working, they never went offline.”

The installation of cabinets for this San Diego fire station remodel occurred in phases across the fire station, with Holland’s team working around the firefighters’ schedules to ensure they always had access to necessary facilities. This strategic planning and coordination were crucial to minimizing downtime. A critical aspect of this was the need for a quick turnaround in the kitchen.

“We had a very quick install turnaround for that kitchen because those guys were still using the space,” Anderson adds. “They set up a rough but workable kitchenette outside, but the team knew it impeded their daily routines.” Proactive communication, seamless coordination, and rapid execution were crucial to the safety and comfort of the station’s crew, proving that a demanding timeline can be met without compromising on quality.

“With public works projects, there is a level of transparency and accountability that’s different from a ‘standard’ commercial job,” Schreibman states. “You have to check certain boxes to even work on projects like that, so we made sure every detail met the highest standards. We knew we were under many watchful eyes, and we were prepared to deliver the quality and compliance required.”

At Holland’s Custom Cabinets, the focus is always on building solutions that serve the client well and stand the test of time.
