This whole-house project in Alpine, CA was for a contractor’s home, ensuring a keen eye for quality. The design features traditional style cabinets with stained wood in darker, earthy tones throughout the home.
The cabinets in this large kitchen are designed to stagger up and down, in and out, creating more right angles on moldings and decorative trim, which adds visual depth to the room. A large decorative range hood and a window valance over the sink create left-to-right symmetry and draw the eye down from the high ceilings, grounding the overall design.
The kitchen boasts two islands. One is two-tiered, creating an excellent gathering space for casual entertaining. The other peninsula-style island provides extra room for storage plus convenient locations for charging stations and power outlets.
Decorative legs and corbels on the sink and island add a traditional look and create more visual depth.
Between the range hood and valance, a wrought iron, decorative door conceals a corner pantry. While Hollands did not build the door, we finished it to match the rest of the kitchen cabinetry.
Stainless steel appliances add a masculine touch and break up the dark wood tones, balancing the overall aesthetic. Stone floors, specifically travertine, complement the wood and cabinet finishes.
The master bathroom features stain-grade alder cabinets with basic raised panel doors and rubbed bronze hardware. His and her vanities create symmetry, with an additional linen cabinet for extra storage. The use of a wiping stain enhances the grain, adding visual depth and character, giving the cabinetry a minimally distressed, older look desired by the homeowners. As with the kitchen cabinets, the use of furniture feet on the cabinetry enhances the traditional look.
In one of the bedrooms, the homeowners wanted to add a bit of mystery and playfulness by having Holland’s create a large, full-height cabinet to conceal a hidden door leading to a child’s playroom. The cabinet also provides actual storage space with part of it serving as closet space.
While more utilitarian in approach, the laundry room maintains the overall look and feel of the home. One side of the laundry features a prep and folding area with under-cabinet storage. The other side includes a utility sink with a pole above for hanging clothes to dry. Despite the taller, oversized washer and dryer, wall cabinets over the appliances provide additional storage.
