If you’ve ever toured Rancho Santa Fe, you’ll quickly observe a balance of distinguished charm with modern elegance and style. Just driving down a street like Paseo Delicias or La Valle Plateada affords you views of upscale sprawling estates. Homeowners maintain a consistency in luxury in the interior living space and Holland’s was proud to be a key partner to deliver expert guidance, fabrication, and installation of custom luxury cabinetry to one Spanish-style estate.
Blending Eras: Charm & Function
The central aim for this Rancho Santa Fe kitchen was to cultivate a space that felt genuinely rooted in its history, yet provided seamless charm and comfort for daily living. “Working with Richard Tirocchi and Advantage Design Partners provided a solid guide to achieving the client’s vision,” noted Randy Schreibman, Director of Sales and Marketing at Holland’s Custom Cabinets.
“Their understanding of traditional aesthetics, combined with a sharp eye for modern functionality, allowed us to push the boundaries while staying true to the home’s original character.” This meant making modifications that subtly complement the expansive estate’s traditional architecture while preventing any jarring contrasts between living spaces. “Our synergy allowed us to achieve the best of both worlds, new and old,” Schreibman added.
This nuanced process required careful planning, ensuring that every contemporary addition—from new appliances to reconfigured cabinetry layouts—appeared as though it had always been in place. Holland’s particular expertise proved vital in navigating these complexities with our industry partners to ensure each new component contributed to a unified and enduring style.
The Iconic Blue Cabinet
A truly memorable feature within the Rancho Santa Fe traditional kitchen cabinets is a unique blue cabinet hutch. Years after its installation, it remains affectionately dubbed “the blue cabinet” at Holland’s workshop.
Schreibman admitted there was some initial hesitation. “When we first designed that blue cabinet, our team was pretty skeptical during the sampling phase. We thought there was no way it would work,” he said. Yet, the final result dramatically exceeded all expectations. “It looks like an antique hutch installed in the middle of that brand new kitchen. You can’t tell that it’s a piece crafted just weeks prior,” Schreibman elaborated.
The cabinet was carefully designed, its surfaces precisely weathered and distressed to give it a genuine aged look, perfectly showcasing the project’s goal of subtle integration. The hutch was artfully placed among other stained cabinets, illustrating the beautiful harmony of different finishes in crafting an elevated, curated, traditional style.
“Holland’s team loves taking on the most unique customization challenges, regardless of size, color, or texture, “said Schreibman. “Those wishes can come from the skilled designers we collaborate and partner with or the visionary homeowners who come to us, and of course, for other homeowners we serve, we can bring them designs that they hadn’t considered during a custom cabinetry project.”

Project Highlights: Customized Craftsmanship for Your Home
Beyond the striking cabinet hutch, Holland’s incorporated many handcrafted details to enhance the character of the space, working closely with the design team to bring these intricate antique-feeling elements to life.
- Construction Versatility: Utilizing both face frame and European cabinetry methods to meet diverse design needs and preferences.
- Varied Finishes: Combining stained and antique paint-grade materials for depth and visual interest.
- Applied Aging: Cabinetry processes for an authentic aged appearance, including distressing and glazing, for genuine heirloom aesthetics.
- Traditional Carvings: Integration of turnstile legs, fluting, and corbels for historical detail and elegance.
- Appliance Integration: Precise placement of modern appliances to blend seamlessly with traditional design.
- Layout Optimization: Modern kitchen configurations are implemented while maintaining traditional visual appeal, such as relocating the sink to the island, to enhance flow and utility.
- Flooring Integration: Expertly blending new wood cabinetry with existing wood flooring, ensuring a cohesive overall space.
The culmination of these customized features, masterfully integrated through Holland’s specialized processes and expert craftsmanship, resulted in a kitchen that not only met modern demands but also perfectly embodied the timeless charm and historical authenticity desired.
Rancho Santa Fe Traditional Kitchen Cabinets
This remodel highlights Holland’s remarkable ability to combine practical, innovative updates with a deep respect for the history and authenticity of a space, delivering exceptional collaborative work and stellar client results. While today’s kitchens serve many purposes, this one needed to appear as if it belonged to a bygone era, yet could operate flawlessly as a contemporary space.
A big part of the joy of this project, Schreibman explained, was in fabricating and installing Rancho Santa Fe traditional kitchen cabinets that honor the home’s existing architecture and its neighborhood’s unique character, rather than chasing fleeting trends from popular design sites. This project serves as a strong example of how thoughtful design can respect a home and neighborhood’s heritage while confidently incorporating new features.
“Building to the neighborhood you live in is very important,” Schreibman stated. “When done correctly, it is more impactful and powerful than simply adopting a new style or pursuing fleeting trends.” This philosophy of thoughtful design guides Holland’s approach, ensuring that each project, whether a grand estate or a cherished family home, results in cabinetry that is not only highly functional and visually striking but also truly fits its unique surroundings.
