Jamul Winery Circular Tasting Room

When the owners of award-winning Granite Lion Cellars in Jamul began developing their new tasting room, they weren’t just building a functional space for their guests; they were creating a legacy piece for their estate. This project centered on a winery tasting room with a cupola-shaped, circular footprint. An architectural statement that required a high degree of adaptability and creative, on-site problem-solving.

The goal was to create a world-class entertainment space with a refined, industrial-luxe aesthetic. Holland’s Custom Cabinets provided the technical expertise and attentive service to execute an evolving vision, ensuring every inch of the curved space was utilized without sacrificing the desired upscale atmosphere.

A Passion Project for Granite Lion Cellars

For a project of this magnitude, the “brief” was more than a blueprint; it was a living conversation among the owners and trades. Holland’s Custom Cabinets worked closely with the group to facilitate a multifaceted vision, ensuring the final results elevated the space in alignment with Granite Lion Cellars’ standards.

“This was a true passion project for the owners,” says Randy Schreibman, Director of Sales and Marketing at Holland’s Custom Cabinets. “Our role was to serve as the steady hand, translating the high-level aesthetic into a physical reality. Because the vision was refined in real-time on the tasting room floor, we prioritized adaptability and high-touch communication to ensure their expectations were not just met, but exceeded.”

Engineering Precision for a Circular Footprint

“This project required us to throw out the traditional playbook,” adds Schreibman. The layout called for a circular bar divided into six symmetrical sections. Because the heavy stone countertops were secured before the cabinetry was manufactured, Holland’s team worked in reverse. Every component had to be precision-fit into a pre-existing footprint where even a fraction of an inch could compromise the entire installation.

“With the countertops already in place, we pivoted,” Schreibman explains. “We sent our team to the site with raw materials to hand-scribe and build the structures underneath the stone. It required a level of manual precision impossible to achieve with off-site manufacturing alone, but was crucial to protect the owners’ investment in those premium materials already set in place.”

Material Innovation: Cleaf & Select Alder

To achieve the desired contemporary luxe style while ensuring durability, Holland’s selected a mix of materials:

  • The Bar Cabinetry: The bar cabinetry was crafted using Cleaf textured melamine. This durable, Italian-engineered material was chosen for its sophisticated tactile finish, perfectly complementing the industrial aesthetic of the exposed brick and warm wood ceilings.
  • Wine Storage: The custom wine racks were built using Select Alder. Unlike “Rustic” Alder, which is known for heavy knots and a farmhouse feel, Select Alder is a premium grade with a more uniform grain and fewer knots. This choice elevates the woodwork to the estate’s scale.
  • Hardwood & Veneer Integration: To ensure the wine storage remains stable in this environment, Holland’s used solid hardwood and matching veneers. This combination prevents the wood from warping while maintaining a seamless, luxurious appearance.
  • Integrated Lighting: A primary focus was the intentional use of lighting to showcase the wine area without visible background wires or bulky fixtures.

 Jamul Winery Circular Tasting Room

The successful relationship between Granite Lion Cellars and Holland’s Custom Cabinets was defined by a willingness to iterate. Because the owners’ vision evolved throughout the process, the team remained on-site for weeks, adjusting and modifying the woodwork. By assigning a residential project manager to lead this commercial build, Holland’s applied the same high-touch service and attention to detail that this project required.

“We don’t just deliver a product,” notes Schreibman. “We manage the complexity of the process and ensure client satisfaction throughout. Our team remains committed to modifying and refining the work until we achieve our client’s vision.”

The completed Jamul winery circular tasting room serves as a striking centerpiece for the vineyard. The custom-contoured bar and wine racks create a sophisticated environment, demonstrating that, in the right hands, unique architectural constraints can yield beautifully tailored, functional craftsmanship.
